Tommy's Gardening Tips BACK TO HOME : ARCHIVE INDEX
Hello the
re
all you green-fingered friends - Tommy here!
For the next six weeks, while Steve takes his well-deserved rest, I will be offering advice on any of your horticultural problems. We all know that golf and gardening go hand-in-hand, so if you have any queries just let me know at the usual address, and I will do my best to send you all up the garden path.
This week: REPLANTING LEEKS
Recently, I was given some leeks for re-planting by someone, who shall remain nameless. Unfortunately, when Captain Campbell dropped them off, he failed to tell anyone, leaving them at the back door. Given the nature of the 'leeks' they were subsequently mistaken for chives and found their way into a rather mediocre cheese and chive dip, which turned out in fact to be a cheese and premature baby leek dip!
The point I am making here is, before leeks can be re-planted they should be at least pencil diameter, not as in Walter's case, needle thin! Snip the root off 6mm from the stalk, remove the leaves and dibble the plant into the ground. Don't fill round the plant with earth - fill this with water. Leave until mother nature takes over. You are now on your way to eventually harvesting leeks fit for any tattie soup.
Tommy.
