Helpful Hints With Steve                                              BACK TO HOMEPAGE

"Hi, Steve Logan here.

This week - a couple of Helpful Hints that on the face of it may seem rather obvious to the seasoned golfer, but could make the difference between winning and losing your tie.

First: SUBTLE INTIMIDATION OF YOUR OPPONENT

Remember that when you turn up at the starter's box for your next competition tie - your opponent will be nervous, especially if its someone like myself they are playing! You can capitalise on this situation by, for example, just happening to mention that you shot a 66 the other day and it could have been lower had it not been so windy, or that you are currently the Masters Texas Scramble champion. A less subtle form of intimidation is to completely rubber your opponent and omit to shake hands or wish them the 'best of luck'. I on the other hand prefer a more direct approach as shown below.

This behaviour generally will have a most un-settling affect on your opponent and as a result of which, I have seen many players duff their drive into the burn at the 1st on the Medal...

Which brings me on to my second HH:

 CAREFUL POSITIONING OF THE SCOOP

Last weekend, there was an extremely rare occurrence. I was momentarily distracted by one of my un-sporting opponents (Elliot) at the 1st and somehow managed to top my drive into the burn. Accepting this minor aberration in my usual fashion, I retrieved my ball, deposited the scoop back into the burn and proceeded to hit my 3rd shot. Unfortunately, the ball clanked off the scoop and flew sidieways, landing 6ft from the pin on the 18th! So remember - always put the scoop back into the burn outwith the line of flight of the ball!

That's all for now folks. More next week.
