Helpful Hints With Steve                                        BACK TO HOME : ARCHIVE INDEX

"Hi, Steve Logan here. It must be wonderful for all you members out there to have me back with another series of Helpful Hints. Some of you I know, have been struggling with your game since my last stint - so in an effort to make amends, I am starting with not one but two Helpful Hints :

Firstly, a number of my clients at Ballumbie golf clinic have come to me with the problem of thinning or topping shots. The answer is really very simple - concentrate on grooving your swing and transferring your weight correctly (be careful Elliot - remember your knees). Allow your head to rotate naturally behind the ball and complete a full turn by not fixing your gaze on the ball with both eyes. At first you may feel as if you are swaying (in your case Walter - you are) but if you transfer your weight correctly and keep your back angle intact, you cannot help make a good backswing! The following photos illustrate my point perfectly:

PERFECT SWING

IMPERFECT SWING

Dear Steve, I was wondering how you could fix your gaze without using both eyes - unless you were some sort of circus performer or very drunk perhaps?

The Ed.

And for this week only - a bonus Helpful Hint - How to retrieve your ball from the burn:

Make sure you have a ball retriever in your bag at all times. In common with our members who are not classified as 'tall', I prefer a 3-stage extending retriever which ensures I can reach the ball irrespective of its final resting place in the burn. I know Stan Shepherd also uses this specification of equipment. If you are unfortunate enough to go into the burn, which in my case is very infrequently, try to get to the hazard before your opponent (which isn't too difficult if its Elliot you're playing) in this way you can retrieve your ball and continue the game without holding up play. Grip the scoop as if you were hoeing the garden or sweeping the floor (sorry Elliot, you won't have a clue about this) and scoop the ball up AGAINST the flow of the water The photo below shows me retrieving a ball I had deliberately hit into the burn to illustrate the technique:

That's all for now folks. More next week.
