Helpful Hints With Steve                                BACK TO HOME : ARCHIVE INDEX

"Hi, Steve Logan here. Sorry for the delay in posting my latest HH. I'm off to play in the Tunisian Open next week and I have been busy fine-tuning some aspects of my game. Everything seems to be perfect now and I'm only too pleased to be able to pass on some of my expertise to ordinary golfers like yourselves. Before I do - I thought you might be interested in this extract from a member's letter I received this week":

"Dear Steve, I had to write to tell you just how much your Helpful Hints section has improved my game. So much so that I am confident I will avoid picking up the Winter League wooden spoon this year! Your page has also given me greater confidence in other walks of life, such as chatting to younger women, which in the past I have avoided due to my rather reserved nature. I thought you may be interested in this photo which shows me socialising with a few colleagues - all thanks to you".

Yours in seventh heaven, Captain Holland.

"Well Captain Holland, I am so pleased that my HHWS page has given you some other interest in life apart from  new kitchens and the like. Keep up the good work".

ANYWAY - on to my HH for this week and one aspect of the game many players find extremely nerve-wracking: PUTTING

"Putting is the most demanding shot in golf as there is little margin for error.  Unlike most of you, I have been using the same putter for over 30 years.  Most golfers blame the “putter” like Elliot the Cat who has had more putters than Hearts has had Managers, but one should never blame their tools - it’s all in the action.  Always line up the putter head on ball to target, ensure your shoulders and feet are parallel to target.  So get practising, hope this little hint will help - especially our resident Arab,  Frank, who quite frankly (get the pun) is about as good with the putter as the Arabs are at scoring goals.

Take a look at the photos below and see the do's and dont's of putting:

This player's stance is all wrong, head moving, shoulders out of line and notice the left heel off the ground - very poor!  Even his mates can't help laughing at this pathetic putting style.

In contrast, this member displays all the correct characteristics of a good putting action in accordance with my latest HHWS. Pity he makes such a mess of the roads with his big green tractor.

"That's all for now fans. Tune in next time for more HHWS".
