New Driving Range proposed for Carnoustie Links

Graeme Duncan, Carnoustie Golf Links General Manager, has unveiled proposals for a new golf driving range and coaching facility on what is currently the 1st hole of the Buddon Course. A planning application for the new facility is to be lodged with Angus Council in the near future. Mr Duncan explained that since the proposal was first mooted some 18 months ago, a great deal of research has been undertaken by the GLMC which has enabled them to revise the plans and take into account many of the concerns raised by residents, perhaps the most contentious being the initial requirement for a 10m high protective fence round the perimeter of the facility. Following extensive consultations with one of world's leading experts in golf ball development, Dr Steve Otto, Director - Research and Testing at The R&A, Mr Duncan said that the fence would now only be required along the beach side of the proposed area and would be a maximum of 3m in height. It is thought that 6 permanent jobs would be created at the range which will provide a convenient, secure and comfortable coaching environment free of charge, to all members of the Carnoustie Golf Links junior coaching programme.

The CGLMC is keen to find out what the general public of Carnoustie think about their proposals and has asked the Community Council to conduct a survey of residents to ascertain their views. We will let you know very shortly, when and where you can complete a survey form.

Christmas Dance proceeds go to Rebecca Cottage

The Station Masters Christmas Hootenanny on the 23rd was a resounding success with tickets sold out long before the event. You couldn't even get one on E-bay which shows how popular it was. Entertainment was provided by our old friend Lee with special appearances by Elvis and Neil Holland accompanied by The Blues Brothers. As usual, all proceeds from the shindig went to a local good cause, in this case Rebecca Cottage, at West Haven. Rebecca Cottage is a respite holiday home for Spina Bifida sufferers, owned by the Scottish Spina Bifida Association and maintained by a group of local volunteers throughout the year. It came about through the work of the late Professor Wallace and Mrs. Dorothy Park who, through their own family, came into contact with Rebecca Temperley, a young girl with Spina Bifida. Along with friends and colleagues they eventually raised enough money to enable the purchase of this extremely popular holiday home.

This week we were able to hand over a cheque for £600 to local Rebecca Cottage representatives Shona Gray and Susan Naylor. This amount was made up from the sum of £300, being the proceeds of the raffle and ticket sales for the dance, along with a most generous matching donation on the night by an anonymous benefactor, making the total £600. Captain Campbell said "the generosity of all those who attend our social gatherings has enabled us to donate so much to local good causes over the years. The spontaneous gesture of our friend in doubling the donation money on the night is heart-warming". Shona and Susan were delighted with the donation and assured that the money would go to very good use at the Cottage.
